Bluefin Fish Commands Unprecedented Sum of $3.2m at Tokyo Auction
A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the calendar year.
The winning offer for the 535-pound fish came from the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages restaurants across the country and overseas.
"An inaugural tuna signals fortune," stated the entrepreneur, a familiar participant at the yearly January sale.
Referred to as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is noted for submitting high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Historic Precedent
After the auction, the successful bidder informed journalists that he was "astonished at the amount," stating, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price escalated rapidly."
This new purchase exceeds his own historic purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Even after previously saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now managed to break his personal record once again.
A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids
The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically characterized by exceptionally high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which announced the fish would be available at its restaurants throughout the country.
The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a must-see tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
Swift Service
The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for patrons at the winner's sushi establishments immediately after the auction ended.
"I sense like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after eating something so lucky as the year gets underway," shared one satisfied customer.
