Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials voiced anger after former President Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and stated they should be detained and penalized "with execution" following their publication of a contentious video.

The Message That Triggered the Debate

The clip, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who previously worked in defense or security positions.

"Like us, you all made an pledge to protect and uphold this founding document," the lawmakers stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are clear, you can refuse illegal orders, you can refuse improper directives, you have to decline improper directives. No one has to follow directives that break the legal system or our national charter."

Trump's Angry Reaction

The video message appeared to provoke a heated reaction from the ex-president.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another publication, he wrote: "This represents really serious, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Leaders Answer

Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership released a joint announcement censuring the remarks.

"Political violence has no role in this nation," they declared. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all acted our nation with tremendous patriotism and honor. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous threats of violence against members of Congress, and appeal to GOP representatives to strongly do the same."

The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the security of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must immediately take down these extreme digital publications and retract his violent discourse before he gets someone killed," the announcement continued.

Representatives' Defiant Response

The lawmakers who participated in the video also published a response.

"We serve as former service members and national security professionals who value this United States and took an pledge to safeguard and support the national charter of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we plan to honor it. No intimidation, intimidation, or incitement will deter us from that important obligation."

"The significant point is that the president views it liable to punishment by execution for us to restate the statutes," they continued. "Our service members should know that we have their backs as they carry out their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."

They stated: "All citizens must unite and condemn the president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."

More Political Comments

The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's statements and posted on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of government members."

He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, every American – without partisan consideration – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."

The GOP leader defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "It is very dangerous, you have important representatives of the legislature advising troops to defy commands, I think that is unprecedented in the nation's past."

The GOP official also allegedly informed the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to examine the terminology and determine all that."

Administration Response

During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Does the president want to execute elected officials?", the White House press secretary replied: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the representative said. "We see current representatives of the federal government who worked together to arrange a digital communication to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members advising them to defy the president's lawful orders."

She added: "The purity of our military relies on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can result in casualties, it can cause confusion, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
