Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in the country and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Venus said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to go back to a place that has meant so much to my career."

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.
