The remains of a mother aged 34 and her young daughter, 10 have been discovered inside freezing appliances in an residence in the western part of Austria.

The deceased, a woman from Syria and her daughter, who had been unaccounted for for a number of months, were uncovered on Friday. The cooling units were placed behind a false wall in the apartment, located in the Innsbruck area.

Two men, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were taken into custody in June. The 55-year-old, a work associate of the female victim, stated to police last week that there had been an accident—but rejected homicide.

Addressing the media recently, a representative for the state prosecutor announced the pair were being kept in custody on "high likelihood of intentional killing".

Personal details of those implicated have been withheld by law enforcement, in accordance with Austrian law.

Their going missing was initially flagged by the cousin of the mother, who is based in Germany, on July 25, 2024.

Authorities revealed the male associate informed them at the time she had taken an extended trip with her daughter to see her family in the nation of Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then found to have been used overseas on multiple occasions.

But when police entered the victim's residence, her cellphone was discovered.

An individual also claimed listening to a commotion in the flat, and shouts of "mama" on the day the two were presumed to have gone missing.

A broader official inquiry was started, with authorities uncovering several texts transmitted via the woman's phone—among them a resignation letter to her company and messages to the male associate.

Law enforcement said a significant cash transfer was also moved to the man.

A senior police official stated to media representatives on recently that a storage facility had been leased before the vanishing and a freezer had been installed within.

The two suspects took out the appliance from the unit on the very day the woman and her child went missing, she said. And a seven days after, they purchased a second unit.

Officials believe they think this suggests the deaths were premeditated.

"The cause of death was not identifiable due to the condition of the remains," Tersch commented.

The prosecutor's spokesman—of the public prosecutor's office—stated the specific order of occurrences is yet to be determined, but the victims were expertly concealed and were not found during a earlier inspection.

While the suspects were detained in the summer, it was not until the 12th of November that the suspect acknowledged an event and to hiding the bodies. He rejects any plan to cause death, authorities confirmed.

In a related development, his 53-year-old sibling acknowledged a cover-up but rejected awareness of a murder.

The brothers are currently in pre-trial detention in detention centers in two Austrian cities, situated at a distance.

Through a combined announcement, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative declared the "reported homicide of mother and child... symbolizes the abrupt and violent termination of two human lives and reveals a cruel system".

"Females of all ages are being murdered due to the simple reality that they are female," they went on to say.

"Gender-based killings are a deeply rooted and society-wide problem that we must address decisively."
